I am delighted to be introducing a session on anti-Semitism at this coming weekend's Academy conference in Wyboston Lakes, Bedfordshire, organised by Ideas Matter. Tickets are still available.
Civilisation under Siege is the overall theme of the weekend. Among the topics included are the decolonisation debate, Shakespeare and the meaning of civilisation.
A session particularly relevant to the themes of this website is on Primo Levi’s If This Is A Man. His goal, as a survivor of Auschwitz, was to get people to think more deeply about the meaning of the Holocaust. Sabine Beppler-Spahl, who has also contributed to this site, will introduce the discussion.
Previous articles on this site particularly relevant to the anti-Semitism session include:
Stefanie Borkum on Hannah Arendt on a dangerous fallacy.
Me on why Anti-Semitism is far worse than a prejudice.
Me on the even newer anti-Semitism.
Me on Jews and capitalism.
The aftermath of the 7 October Hamas pogrom in Israel has made the rethinking of anti-Semitism a more urgent task than ever. Both the extent and character of anti-Semitism is changing. Tragically the open expression of anti-Semitic views is once again becoming respectable. It has also become clearer than ever that anti-Semitism is no longer largely confined to the far right. Woke anti-Semitism and Islamism have also become significant forces.
Under these circumstances I am keen not only to maintain this site but to extend its impact. That means raising funds.
