These are the introductory remarks to my Quarterly Review of anti-Semitism for paid subscribers. To receive a copy subscribe following the instructions below.
Israel’s war with multiple surrounding Islamist enemies provided the main focus in relation to anti-Semitism over the past three months. There were also many instances of anti-Semitism in the diaspora but they received much less coverage.
Overall it was a relatively positive period for Israel in military terms with successful strikes against high profile targets. In mid-September there were the remote detonations of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hizbullah members in Lebanon. Then there were the Israeli assassinations of Hamas leaders (most notably Ismail Haniyeh while in a heavily protected compound in Iran) and Hizbullah leaders (including Hassan Nasrallah and Fuad Shukr ). Israel also killed Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, but that was in a routine military operation rather than a planned assassination. October also saw Israel’s full-scale incursion into Lebanon (from 30 September) and Iran firing almost 200 missiles at Israel (1 October). The latter was followed by an Israeli aerial counter-attack against Iranian military targets on 26 October.

The aftermath of the 7 October Hamas pogrom in Israel has made the rethinking of anti-Semitism a more urgent task than ever. Both the extent and character of anti-Semitism is changing. Tragically the open expression of anti-Semitic views is once again becoming respectable. It has also become clearer than ever that anti-Semitism is no longer largely confined to the far right. Woke anti-Semitism and Islamism have also become significant forces.
Under these circumstances I am keen not only to maintain this site but to extend its impact. That means raising funds.
